FAQs

Sussex chairs originate from traditional nineteenth-century Sussex country furniture and were popularised by Morris & Co. during the Arts and Crafts movement. The design prioritised light construction, turned spindles, and woven rush seats as a reaction against heavy Victorian industrial manufacturing.

These chairs are typically constructed using lightweight hardwoods such as ash or beech, often turned to mimic bamboo or simple spindles. The seats are hand-woven from natural marsh rush or straw.

Authentic pieces feature traditional mortise and tenon joinery, subtle variations in turned wooden elements, and authentic wear around the lower stretcher bars. The hand-woven rush seat often exhibits natural colour variation and age-related patination.

Place the chair in a reading corner or hallway to add organic texture and geometric spindle lines. The natural warm tones pair effectively alongside neutral linen upholstery and contemporary minimalist decor.

Keep the wood and rush away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent drying or warping. Vacuum the rush seat gently with a soft brush attachment and condition the wood frame periodically with natural beeswax.
