Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1890s:
Thick figured elm seat with shaped saddle: late Victorian country workshop making.
Lighter patination along the arm rails: honest wear from decades of hand resting.
Turned baluster spindles and ring-turned legs: standard late 19th-century pattern.
Wedged tenons at the arm joints: sound period assembly.

This Victorian smokers bow armchair originates from the late 19th century around 1890. It is constructed from a combination of elm, ash, and beech with a warm brown wax-finished appearance, displaying a curved horseshoe backrest with out-splayed arms, a contoured saddle seat, turned spindles, and ring-turned legs linked by an underframe. The wood grain shows natural variations in tone and subtle surface wear across the timber. The chair measures 82 cm high, 63.5 cm wide, and 58.5 cm deep, with a seat height of 45 cm. In a contemporary interior, this armchair serves as a functional seat in a gentleman's library, home study, hallway, or reading nook. The sturdy construction and classic shape provide comfortable seating while complementing traditional or rustic domestic spaces.

FAQs

A smokers bow is a traditional low-backed wooden armchair originating in 19th-century Britain, featuring a horseshoe-shaped top rail supported by turned spindles and a contoured saddle seat.

These armchairs were predominantly crafted from native British hardwoods, frequently using solid elm for the contoured seat combined with ash, beech, or oak for the turned legs, stretchers, and back rail.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-turned spindles, wedged mortise-and-tenon joinery, natural timber grain variations, and genuine age-related wear to the lower stretchers and armrests.

Position the armchair alongside a modern home office desk, within a reading alcove, or in a hallway setting to introduce warm wood grain and historical depth to modern interiors.

Apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice annually using a soft lint-free cloth, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre duster while keeping the piece away from direct radiator heat.
