FAQs

A smokers bow Windsor armchair is a low-backed variation of the traditional Windsor chair, characterised by a continuous curved wooden rail that forms the armrests and back support. Popularised during the nineteenth century, these robust chairs were widely used in public houses, offices, and domestic settings.

Traditional English Windsor chairs are typically constructed using a combination of native hardwoods. Elm is commonly used for the thick, shaped seat due to its resistance to splitting, while oak, ash, or beech are used for the turned spindles, legs, and rails.

Authentic period Windsor chairs often feature hand-shaped seats with adze marks on the underside, wedged tenon joints where the legs penetrate the seat, and natural wear patterns on the front stretchers and armrests consistent with historic use.

A smokers bow chair functions effectively as a standalone desk chair, accent piece in a hallway, or corner seating in a living room. Pairing warm timber tones with neutral textiles or minimalist contemporary surroundings highlights the structural form of the turned wood.

To preserve the timber finish, keep the chair away from direct heat sources and bright sunlight to prevent drying or cracking. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional applications of natural beeswax maintain the protective patina.
