This large antique French Louis XVI Revival trumeau mirror from around 1900 consists of a painted wooden frame in a cream finish accented with giltwood mouldings. The upper panel displays a carved relief trophy featuring a flaming torch, musical instruments, and ribbon cresting, all rendered in gold. Below this decorative section sits an arched mirror plate enclosed by a carved gilt border, topped with a shell motif carving. The overall piece measures 207 cm high, 88 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this wall mirror suits placement above a mantelpiece in a living room, drawing room, or hallway to add architectural presence and reflect light. The surface shows weathered patination and craquelure across the painted cream sections, indicating age and long use. The vertical proportions allow it to stand or hang prominently against a principal wall, creating a traditional focal point in an interior scheme.

A trumeau mirror originally referred to a mirror set into the wooden panelling between two windows or above a fireplace in 18th-century France. These pieces feature a painted or carved decorative wooden panel mounted directly above the mirror glass within a single frame.

Traditional French trumeau mirrors were constructed using solid softwood frames layered with gesso, paint, and gold leaf gilding. The upper decorative panels featured carved timber reliefs or painted oil scenes set into the frame surround.

Authentic period pieces show indications of age such as natural craquelure in the painted surfaces, hand-carved joinery on the backboard, minor gilt loss, and oxidisation or foxing on the glass silvering.

Position a trumeau mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table to accentuate ceiling height and draw the eye upward. The combination of painted timber and gilded detailing pairs well with both traditional and contemporary neutral schemes.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth or soft brush, avoiding any liquid cleaners or water on the painted and gilded surfaces. Clean the glass carefully with a damp cloth, ensuring no moisture seeps into the edges of the frame.
