Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Newspaper lining on the back dated 18 December 1899: fixes the date.
Fine shrinkage lines across the moulded composition ornament: natural ageing of gesso.
Gilded finish rubbed through to red bole beneath: decades of careful cleaning.
Greek key scrolls and anthemion pediment: late Victorian architectural taste.
Heavy cast iron side plates secured with slotted screws: period hanging brackets.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian overmantel mirror comes in a French Chateau style, fashioned from giltwood, glass, and gesso with a gold finish. The moulded and gilded frame incorporates an egg and dart cornice, reeded columns, acanthus leaves, floral scrolls, Greek key decoration, and a beaded outer edge, topped by an arched cresting and scroll brackets. The original plate displays foxing, and the piece retains its original gilt with a mellow patina, along with original panelled backboards fitted with wall brackets and enclosing newspapers dated 1899. Structurally solid and sturdy, the woodwork shows no woodworm and contains no missing or loose decoration. The mirror measures 169 cm high, 147 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. Placed above a mantel in a living room, dining room, or bedroom, it anchors a traditional interior while reflecting natural light across the space.

FAQs

An overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, serving as a primary focal point that accentuates room height and reflects architectural light.

Traditional frames feature carved timber or moulded composition ornament applied over wood, coated in gesso layers and finished with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic examples exhibit natural wear to the gilding that exposes the red or grey clay bole beneath, alongside period-appropriate backing boards and joinery.

Position the mirror above a fireplace or fix it above a modern console table to introduce architectural structure and contrast against minimalist decor.

Remove dust using a soft dry feather duster or camel-hair brush, avoiding liquids and chemical cleaners that compromise gold leaf surfaces.
