This nineteenth-century overmantel mirror dates from the Victorian and Gothic Arts and Crafts period. The frame is constructed from giltwood and gesso with a gold finish, housing a clear glass plate with light oxidation and age-related imperfections. Design details include a square profile frame, extending corner joints, raised geometric bosses, and decorative finials at the upper corners. The solid frame has an aged and patinated finish, displaying knocks, marks, wear, losses, repairs, and alterations, while retaining a combination of refinishing and touches of the original surface. Overall, the mirror has a height of 138 cm, a width of 123 cm, and a depth of 7 cm, with the glass measuring 122 cm by 96 cm. Suitable for domestic settings today, this piece is designed for placement above a fireplace mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway. Its scale and architectural profile complement traditional and character interiors alike, serving as a functional wall mirror and a decorative focal point.

Arts and Crafts mirrors from the nineteenth century emphasize structural honesty, simple geometric forms, and handcrafted detailing rather than excessive rococo ornamentation. Framing often features exposed joinery motifs, linear moldings, and stylized floral or geometric bosses.

These mirrors were constructed using solid carved wood or pine sub-frames coated in layers of gesso plaster. Fine gold leaf was applied via water or oil gilding, surrounding heavy plate glass.

Authentic nineteenth-century mirrors show hand-cut timber backing boards, natural age-related oxidisation or light distress to the mirror plate, and subtle wear through the gilding revealing red or yellow bole beneath the gesso.

Place the mirror above a modern or period fireplace mantelpiece to act as a focal point. The reflective surface introduces light into the room, while the gold tones contrast effectively against both neutral and dark painted wall surfaces.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft feather duster or soft lint-free cloth. Avoid water, commercial spray cleaners, or solvents, as moisture dissolves gesso and damages delicate gold leaf.
