Antique Italian Gilt Overmantel Mirror

An unusual gilt Italian overmantel mirror from the Empire period (Early 19th Century).

The frame is centred by a shell shaped element within foliage carvings, flanked by floral rosette decorations and completed with gilded carved lion's paw feet, which probably are a later addition.

Retaining its original mercury mirror plate, this wonderful mirror shows a lovely patina with beautiful shadings due to the red bole that emerges from under the gilding.

Wear commensurate with the age of the frame with the mirror extremely fascinating with its uniformly smoky appearance, just a few natural fine vertical mercury lines on the left and a few dots.
