Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency overmantel mirrors were designed during the early 19th century in Britain, typically featuring symmetrical classical proportions, arching tops, and motifs derived from neoclassical architecture such as fluted columns, pilasters, and beaded mouldings.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or lime wood foundations carved with ornamental details. A gesso substrate was applied before gold leaf was laid using water or oil gilding techniques over the wooden framework.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-carved joinery, natural wear to the gilded layer revealing reddish or grey bole underneath, and light oxidisation or dark spotting on the original mercury or silvered mirror glass.

Positioning an overmantel mirror above a clean-lined fireplace surround or a simple console table creates a focal point, pairing traditional gilded craftsmanship with contemporary wall colours for structural contrast.

Dust the gilded surfaces gently using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths which strip fragile gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be applied carefully to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the glass to prevent moisture seeping into the frame.
