These 19th-century Chinese side chairs, in the Qing Dynasty style, comprise a matched pair of hardwood concubine chairs finished in a reddish-brown lacquer over elm. Each chair has a yoke top rail, a curved central back splat with a carved medallion, and an openwork carved apron below the square timber seat, supported by box stretchers. The timber shows visible grain texture beneath the warm reddish-brown finish, with subtle wear across the corners and edges, and the exposed joinery includes turned stretchers near the base. Measuring 85 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 34 cm deep, these small chairs fit comfortably into contemporary living spaces, bedrooms, or entrance halls as functional accent seating or decorative side pieces.

Yoke-back side chairs are traditional Chinese wooden seating designs characterised by an un-upholstered timber frame, a contoured central back splat, and a top rail resembling a cattle yoke. Originating in Ming and Qing dynasty furniture design, these armless variants were commonly used in domestic reception rooms and halls.

These chairs were primarily crafted from regional hardwoods or elm (jumu) and constructed without metal nails using precise mortise-and-tenon joinery. Surfaces were typically finished with multiple layers of natural sap lacquer to protect the timber and accentuate carved decorative panels.

Authentic 19th-century examples exhibit integrated mortise-and-tenon joints, hand-carved decorative splats, and natural wear to the lacquer finish around contact areas like the footrests and seat edges. Uneven patination, historic timber movement, and exposed structural joints further indicate period origin.

Chinese side chairs function well as architectural accent pieces in entrance halls, on either side of a console table, or paired with contemporary dining furniture. The minimalist linear silhouette creates visual interest when juxtaposed with clean modern architecture and muted upholstery.

Keep lacquered timber furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage, cracking, and fading. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleaners, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to preserve the original finish.
