FAQs

Rococo giltwood mirrors from the 18th century are characterised by asymmetrical forms, elaborate C-scrolls, acanthus leaf carvings, and naturalistic motifs, rendered in carved wood coated with gesso and gold leaf.

Craftsmen traditionally carved frames from softwoods like pine or lime, applied layers of gesso plaster, coated the surface with coloured clay bole, and laid paper-thin sheets of gold leaf before burnishing.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery, natural age-related foxing on the glass, visible seam lines where gold leaf sheets overlap, and dark bole undercoating showing through worn areas.

Positioning a carved giltwood mirror above a contemporary sideboard or minimalist fireplace creates a focal point through the juxtaposition of historical detail and clean architectural lines.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently with a soft feather duster, avoiding moisture or chemical sprays that dissolve gesso and water-gilding, while glass should be cleaned using a damp cloth carefully applied away from the frame edge.
