Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Water gilding worn through to red bole: many decades of careful cleaning.
Hand-punched textured ground in the gesso: early eighteenth-century workshop practice.
Hand-dressed pine backboard shaped to the cresting: period timber framing.
Deeply carved plume and scrolling foliage: classic George I proportions.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian giltwood and gesso pier mirror dates from the 18th century. The narrow looking glass has a warm and mellow gold leaf finish with visible oxidation, a carved Prince of Wales feathers centre crest at the top, floral motifs, and scrolled foliage decoration flanking the frame. The glass comprises a split plate with bevelled edges, with the upper section featuring an etched star motif. The structure includes original backboards and measures 135 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 9.5 cm deep. Suitable for placement on a narrow wall space in a hallway, bedroom, or living room, the mirror functions well to reflect light in compact areas while adding traditional character to the interior. The piece is in home ready condition for everyday use in a domestic setting.

FAQs

Pier mirrors were tall, narrow mirrors designed during the Georgian period to occupy the wall space between windows to reflect natural light into the interior.

The underlying frames were carved from softwood, coated with multiple coats of gesso plaster, and finished with gold leaf applied via water gilding or oil gilding.

Genuine period examples often feature hand-carved wood structure beneath gesso layers, red or yellow bole clay under thin worn gilding, and multi-plate mercury glass panels with characteristic foxing.

Position the mirror on a narrow accent wall, above a hallway console table, or between two tall windows to enhance architectural height and natural illumination.

Dust gently using a dry feather duster or soft microfibre cloth, keeping water, liquid cleaners, and solvent polishes away from the gilding as moisture dissolves gesso and lifts gold leaf.
