An impressive French Louis XVI style trumeau mirror dates from the period around 1870. The structure combines painted wood in a faded grey colour with gilt wood elements, featuring an egg and dart frieze along the top moulding and a reeded surround framing the glass. The upper panel holds a large carved gilt wood cresting adorned with shell motifs, floral swags, and a central circular boss, while non-original mirror glass sits below. The body carries a recently applied grey paint finish showing an aged look, and old worm to the rear has received recent treatment. The piece measures 210 cm high and 129 cm wide. Placed in a home today, it functions as a striking decorative wall fixture positioned above the mantel in a reception room or living space.

A trumeau mirror is a traditional French wall mirror design that originated in the 18th century, featuring a mirror glass section set below an ornate carved or painted wooden panel within a single unified rectangular frame.

These mirrors are constructed using carved timber frames finished with painted surfaces, gold leaf water gilding over a gesso foundation, and silvered glass mirror plates.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of age such as natural oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, hand-carved details on the wooden cresting, and layered gesso visible beneath distressed areas of gilding.

Positioning a trumeau mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece or a hallway console table creates a strong vertical focal point that draws the eye upward and adds architectural depth to contemporary rooms.

Dust the gilded carvings gently with a dry, soft camel-hair brush and clean the mirror glass with a damp lint-free cloth, avoiding water contact with the gold leaf or painted wood panels.
