This 1930s Art Deco display cabinet takes a distinctive cathedral arch shape, executed in figured mid tone walnut veneer with warm brown wood grain patterns. The English vitrine has two glazed doors framed by decorative curved wooden glazing bars and supported by squat block feet at the base. Original key hardware secures both doors, opening to an interior lined with original silk backing, three glass shelves, and a lower display surface. The polished exterior shows rich wood figuring along the arched top and upright stiles, complementing the restored condition of the timber. Standing 141 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 32 cm deep, the cabinet functions as a storage piece for a living room, dining room, or hallway. The vertical proportions allow the piece to stand against a wall while displaying glassware, ceramics, or collections behind the glass panels.

FAQs

Art Deco display cabinets from the 1930s feature streamlined geometric forms, architectural arches, and rich wood veneers such as walnut or mahogany. Designed to showcase china and glassware, these pieces combine practical storage with the sophisticated decorative aesthetic typical of the interwar period.

Cabinetmakers during this era predominantly utilised figured walnut veneers applied over solid timber frames, paired with glazed door panels and interior glass shelving. Handles and escutcheons were typically crafted from chrome, Bakelite, or cast brass.

Authentic 1930s pieces showcase hand-applied book-matched walnut veneers, original glass panels, and period-correct hardware such as brass or nickel keyhole surrounds. Examining the frame construction and internal shelf supports often reveals traditional joinery methods rather than modern fixings.

Position the vitrine as a focal point against a neutral backdrop to highlight its grain pattern and arched silhouette. Use the glass shelves to display modern ceramics, books, or glassware, balancing classic design with contemporary decor.

Dust the polished wooden surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the veneer. Clean the glass panels using a specialist glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the frame to prevent moisture damage to the timber.
