This pair of 1930 Art Deco display cabinets is fashioned from figured walnut with a warm brown timber colour and waxed finish. Each cabinet has an arched top, a glazed front door with wooden astragals, and clear glass side panels enclosing three interior glass shelves. Small rectangular metal escutcheons are set on the doors. The framework rests on a stepped plinth base, and one cabinet is visibly darker in shade than its partner. The timber shows grain patterns typical of figured walnut, and the glazing bars create geometric motifs across the front view. Each display cabinet measures 126 cm high, 58 cm wide, and 29 cm deep. These matching cabinets suit placement in a living room, dining room, or hallway to display collections of glassware, ceramics, or books behind clear glass. The glass sides and multiple shelves permit light to enter from multiple angles, illuminating the interior contents from the side and front. The symmetrical proportions and clean architectural lines complement modern, transitional, or period interior schemes where visible storage is required.

FAQs

Art Deco display cabinets from the 1920s and 1930s feature geometric proportions, streamlined contours, and figured wood veneers such as walnut or mahogany. They typically incorporate glass doors and side panels designed to display ceramics, glassware, or collectables.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised exotic or figured timber veneers, including burr walnut, rosewood, and birds eye maple, laid over solid timber frames. Curved glass panels, mirror backs, and brass or chrome hardware were also frequently integrated into the construction.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period joinery techniques, such as hand-cut dovetail joints, solid timber linings, and period-correct lock mechanisms. The application of book-matched veneers and distinctive geometric astragal glazing bars are key indicators of original production.

These cabinets function effectively as focal points in contemporary dining rooms, living areas, or hallway alcoves. Styling the interior shelves with minimal, modern ceramics or glassware balances the strong architectural lines and rich wood grain of the piece.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood veneer. Avoid placing the furniture near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight to prevent veneer shrinkage and fading.
