This Louis XVI style wall mirror dates from 1900 and uses giltwood, glass, and gesso in a gold colour scheme. The piece takes an oval form with a beveled glass plate, surrounded by a beaded moulding and an outer frame decorated with swags. At the top sits a carved ribbon bow crest accompanied by a torch and quiver motif, from which trailing side ribbons extend down the sides to create the impression that the mirror is hanging. The mirror measures 91 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a hallway, bedroom, or living room, this wall mirror hangs well above a mantelpiece or console table to reflect light and add a traditional French Chateau decorative element to an interior. The gold finish and carved details complement both period and contemporary room schemes, serving as a functional wall hanging with ornamental appeal.

Louis XVI style mirrors are characterised by Neoclassical symmetry, geometric oval or rectangular frames, and classical decorative crests such as ribbon bows, quivers of arrows, torches, and foliate garlands.

These mirrors are constructed using hand-carved timber or moulded gesso over a wooden frame, finished with water or oil gilding where thin sheets of gold leaf are applied over a bole clay base.

Authentic period examples feature hand-carved wood backing boards, square-headed iron nails, visible red or yellow bole clay under worn gilding, and natural silvering degradation or foxing on the glass plate.

Position the mirror centrally above a console table, fireplace mantelpiece, or sideboard to create a balanced focal point that introduces historical architectural detailing to contemporary spaces.

Dust the gilded frame regularly with a dry, soft feather duster or soft-bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water which can dissolve the water-gesso ground and strip the gold leaf finish.
