This nineteenth-century wall mirror brings Neoclassical style to an interior, executed in giltwood, gesso, and glass with a bright gold finish. The vertical oval plate sits inside a reeded frame ornamented with carved ribbon twist moulding, topped by a prominent carved ribbon bow crest. It measures 104 cm high, 77 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. Suitable for placement above a sideboard in a dining room, living space, or hallway, the piece reflects light while adding period character to a wall. The construction combines moulded timber and gilded surfaces with sculptural relief detailing at the top and sides, echoing French Chateau design sensibilities.

Nineteenth-century oval gilt mirrors are characterised by their oval frames crafted from timber and decorative gesso, finished with applied gold leaf. They frequently incorporate Neoclassical decorative elements such as ribbon bows, reeded borders, and floral garlands reflecting French and British design influences of the period.

These mirrors were constructed using carved wood frames coated in gessoa smooth mixture of chalk and animal gluebefore thin sheets of gold leaf were applied to the surface. The reflective glass in nineteenth-century examples was typically silvered or mercury-gilded plate glass.

Authentic pieces often exhibit signs of age such as slight oxidisation or foxing on the glass, natural rubbing to the gilt surface revealing the underlying red or grey clay bole, and hand-cut timber backing boards.

Positioning an oval gilt mirror above a hallway console, fireplace mantelpiece, or dining room sideboard creates a focal point. The reflective surface introduces light while the metallic gold tone complements both neutral palettes and dark wall colours.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding liquid or chemical cleaners which can dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water, ensuring moisture does not seep into the frame edges.
