The Windsor chair originated in the English countryside during the early 18th century, evolving from vernacular furniture traditions where spindles were inserted directly into a solid wooden seat.

Traditional construction typically involved a combination of timbers, utilising strong hardwoods like yew, ash, or elm for the bent parts and seat, and fruitwood or beech for the spindles and legs.

Authenticity is assessed through traditional joinery methods, such as wedged through-tenons, hand-carved saddle seats with visible grain patterns, tool marks, and natural timber oxidisation consistent with age.

An antique Windsor chair can be integrated into contemporary spaces by placing it as a standalone accent piece against minimalist backgrounds, pairing it with clean-lined modern desks, or using it to introduce warmth and historical texture.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber.
