Candle boxes were essential household accessories in the 18th and 19th centuries before the widespread availability of gas or electric lighting. They were typically designed to store tallow or beeswax candles securely and were often hung on walls or placed near hearths to protect the wax from dust and pests.

These items were predominantly crafted from native and imported timbers such as mahogany, oak, and pine, often featuring dovetail joints for durability. Many examples incorporate brass hinges, hanging apertures, and decorative wood inlay or marquetry.

Authentic period pieces display period-appropriate joinery, hand-cut dovetails, and genuine patination resulting from age and use. Brass fixtures should match the period of manufacture, and timber surfaces should exhibit natural oxidisation rather than artificial distressing.

Such pieces can be mounted on walls as functional display art or placed on surfaces to store small items, adding warmth and historical texture to contemporary or traditional schemes. Their rich timber tones complement neutral colour palettes and mix well with minimalist or eclectic decor.

To preserve the timber, maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight. Clean periodically with a soft, dry cloth and apply microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the wood without damaging the original finish.
