FAQs

French antique mirrors often feature expressive frames, ranging from ornate Rococo and Louis XV curves to simpler carved wooden mouldings with a rich history of craftsmanship.

Traditional gilt mirrors are typically constructed from carved wood or composition material finished with genuine gold leaf applied over a prepared gesso layer.

Authentication involves examining the backing boards, hand-carved details, the presence of foxing or oxidisation in the mercury or silvered glass, and the aging of the gesso and gold leaf.

A gilt mirror can serve as a striking focal point above a fireplace mantel or console table, creating contrast and reflecting light in contemporary minimalist or transitional spaces.

Gilded frames should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush to avoid damaging the delicate leaf, and harsh chemical cleaners must never be applied to the metallic surface or the glass.
