FAQs

A French carved giltwood mirror is an ornate wall-hanging or pier glass featuring a wooden frame finished with thin sheets of gold leaf, characteristic of classical French interior design traditions.

These pieces are typically constructed from softwoods or hardwoods such as pine or oak, hand-carved with intricate detailing, gessoed, and finished with applied gold leaf or polychrome paint.

Authenticity is assessed through the examination of joinery, the presence of hand-applied gesso and bole under the gold leaf, the ageing of the wooden substrate, and the characteristics of the glass plate.

Positioning the mirror above a mantelpiece or a console table creates a focal point, contrasting traditional ornamentation with clean, modern architectural lines.

Preservation involves dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding chemical cleaning agents, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to protect the delicate gilt and painted surfaces.
