A nineteenth-century French Rococo wall mirror brings traditional chateau style to an interior, measuring 138 cm high by 60 cm wide. The piece incorporates a shaped wooden frame finished with original painted and gilded surfaces, featuring an acanthus cresting at the top, scrolled corners, and foliate moulding along the edges. The glass mirror plate retains its antique character within the heavy giltwood and gesso structure. Position this mirror above a mantelpiece in a living room, hallway, or bedroom to reflect natural light and create a sense of spaciousness. The traditional gold tone coordinates easily with classical and period interior schemes, while the ornate decorative carvings provide a distinct focal point on a wall.

FAQs

Originating in 18th-century France, Rococo giltwood mirrors feature ornate, asymmetrical scrollwork, acanthus leaf motifs, and fluid, naturalistic curves.

These mirrors were typically crafted from carved wood or moulded gesso over a timber frame, which was then coated with red bole and finished with hand-applied gold leaf.

Look for signs of age such as natural wear to the gilding revealing the underlying red bole or white gesso, mercury glass silvering irregularities, and original timber backboards.

Position the mirror above a contemporary fireplace mantel or sleek sideboard to create an engaging contrast between historical ornamentation and modern minimalist lines.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding liquid cleaners or damp cloths which can strip delicate gold leaf.
