An overmantel mirror is a large decorative mirror specifically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace, becoming popular during the Victorian era to reflect light and enhance the sense of space in a room.

They were typically constructed using a wooden base frame, often pine or softwood, which was then coated in gessoa mixture of plaster and gluebefore being hand-gilded with gold leaf or painted with metallic size.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period-specific characteristics such as hand-beveled glass showing slight oxidisation, foxing, or imperfections, hand-applied gesso mouldings, and older backing boards secured with traditional fixings.

Placing an antique overmantel mirror above a contemporary or traditional fireplace creates a striking focal point, contrasting period ornamentation with clean lines to add depth, light, and historical texture to a room.

Gilded surfaces are extremely delicate and should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or abrasive cloths that can strip the gold leaf or damage the fragile gesso details.
