Bilston enamel patch boxes are small decorative containers produced during the 18th century in the English town of Bilston, primarily used by fashionable men and women to store cosmetic patches used to cover blemishes.

These pieces were typically constructed from a copper base coated in white or coloured opaque glass enamel, then fired in a kiln and hand-painted, often mounted with gilt-metal or brass rims and hinges.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic crazing in the enamel, hand-painted details with ironstone or transfer-printed transfers finished by hand, and period-appropriate metal mounts without modern machine tooling.

These small objects serve as refined display pieces when placed on a mantelpiece, inside a glass cabinet, or styled atop a stack of books on a side table to add a touch of historical detail.

They should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity, and cleaned only gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners or harsh abrasives that could damage the fragile enamel surface.
