Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Cross-grain walnut veneer on the frame: early to mid-18th-century cabinet making.
Indented re-entrant upper corners: the classic George II wall mirror silhouette.
Carved and gilded slip inside the frame: decorative border framing the glass.
Gilding rubbed through on high points: natural handling over many decades.
Fine shrinkage lines across the veneer: age-related movement in the timber.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian wall mirror dates from circa 1760 and embodies a classic English Country House style. The rectangular glass plate sits within a sectionally veneered wooden frame displaying a warm brown colour with a polished finish and a good patina. Design details include rounded top corners, a moulded frame, and a gilded inner slip trim. Visible signs of age and wear include surface oxidation across the timber and aged distress speckling within the reflective mirror plate. The dimensions measure 60 cm high, 37.5 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Practical for placement in a hallway, bedroom, or living space, this piece hangs effectively above a sideboard or console table to add functional reflection and period character to a room. The understated proportions allow it to coordinate easily with traditional or eclectic interior schemes, bringing authentic eighteenth-century craftsmanship into a modern home.

FAQs

Georgian walnut wall mirrors originated during the 18th century in Britain, featuring restrained silhouettes, figured walnut veneers, and simple moulded borders designed to reflect light.

These mirrors were constructed using native softwoods or oak framed with figured walnut veneers, paired with hand-cut glass plates and thin moulded inner trims.

Authentic Georgian examples feature hand-cut joinery, original timber backboards secured with hand-forged nails, and age-related oxidisation or surface variations on the glass plate.

Positioning a Georgian walnut mirror above a contemporary console table or in a hallway creates an effective contrast between historical timber tones and modern minimalist lines.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax annually, ensuring glass cleaner does not touch the wooden surround.
