Antique Victorian Carved Walnut Mirror

19th century
Description

A beautiful antique Victorian carved walnut mirror, made in England and dating from around the 1850-1870 period.

It is of outstanding quality and has a lovely, tall design. The solid walnut frame has a gorgeous colour tone and patina, there is crisp and intricate carving.

We have given this a clean and wax polish, it is in excellent condition for its age. The wooden panels on the back have a small section missing at the bottom, the mirror is still held very securely and obviously this is not visible when mounted. There is also some minor wear to the silvered backing of the mirror, which is the original mirror.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian walnut mirrors typically feature rich, medium-to-dark timber frames, arched upper profile sections, and hand-carved decorative motifs such as foliage or scrollwork common to 19th-century decorative arts.

These mirrors were constructed using solid or veneered walnut, silvered glass mirror plates, and carved decorative wood elements mounted upon solid timber backings.

Authentic pieces display original backboards with hand-sawn timber marks, minor age-related oxidation or foxing on the glass plate, and hand-carved joinery techniques consistent with 19th-century manufacturing.

A tall arched mirror can be mounted above a fireplace mantelpiece or positioned above a hallway console table to add vertical proportions and reflect light across contemporary spaces.

Dust the carved timber frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, apply natural wax polish periodically to preserve the walnut finish, and clean the glass plate with non-abrasive solution taking care not to moisten the wooden surround.
