This mid nineteenth century wall mirror is an example of nineteenth century Rococo style French Chateau interior decoration, rendered in carved wood, gesso and gold leaf with a gold colour. The rectangular frame holds an original bevelled plate mirror with slight distressing and water gilding in excellent condition. Ornate openwork carving covers the entire surface, displaying acanthus leaf scrolls, trellis panels, and a scroll pediment cresting at the top. The structure stands 173 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, presenting a substantial vertical presence suited to traditional interiors. Property owners hang this piece above the mantel in a principal reception room or drawing room to reflect natural light and create a sense of spaciousness. The intact wooden carvings and reflective glass maintain their period character for contemporary domestic settings.

Rococo style giltwood mirrors typically feature asymmetrical curves, scrolling acanthus leaves, shell motifs, and openwork foliage carving popularised during the eighteenth century.

Traditional giltwood frames were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso ground, and finished with thin sheets of gold leaf over coloured bole clay.

Authentic antique giltwood pieces often display natural age wear to the gilding, revealing red or yellow clay bole underneath, alongside hand-carved joinery and minor shrinkage cracks on the reverse.

A large carved Rococo mirror works effectively positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table, creating a dramatic focal point that adds architectural texture and reflective light to contemporary spaces.

Dust giltwood gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, strictly avoiding water, damp sponges, and chemical polish, which can dissolve the water-gesso ground and detach the gold leaf.
