FAQs

The captains chair evolved from traditional Windsor chair designs in the 18th and 19th centuries, characterised by a low, curved back rail supported by spindles and an integrated armrest.

These chairs were predominantly constructed using native British hardwoods, frequently featuring elm for seats due to its interlocking grain resisting splitting, combined with ash or beech for spindles and legs.

Authentic pieces exhibit construction hallmarks such as wedged through-tenon arm joints, hand-turned spindles with individual lathe marks, and a saddle-shaped elm seat showing natural wear and oxidisation.

This piece works effectively as a desk chair in a study or as a contrasting sculptural element paired with a minimalist dining table to introduce warmth and texture.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct heat sources, and periodically applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber without sealing the grain.
