An Edwardian carved oak oval wall mirror dating from circa 1910, featuring a deep dark timber frame with a warm brown colour and a smooth polished finish. The frame displays intricate foliate carving with acanthus leaf motifs, four raised rounded bosses positioned at the cardinal points, visible grain variations in the wood, and a hanging chain attached at the top and bottom. The glass shows slight foxing and light scratches in places across the original bevelled surface. Measuring 55 cm high, 80 cm wide and 4 cm deep, the mirror can be hung vertically as a hall mirror or horizontally as an overmantel mirror above a fireplace in a living room, hallway or dining room to add traditional English country house character to the interior.

FAQs

Edwardian carved oak mirrors typically feature refined proportions compared to heavier Victorian styles, incorporating hand-carved foliate patterns, geometric bosses, and oval or rectangular frames manufactured between 1901 and 1910.

Frames were predominantly constructed from solid native timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, housing silvered glass plates with flat or bevelled edges.

Genuine Edwardian examples feature hand-carved decoration, period wooden backing boards, hand-forged hanging fixtures, and natural, minor desilverisation or spotting to the mirror plate.

Position the mirror above a hallway console table, a fireplace mantelpiece, or within a cloakroom to provide visual warmth and natural timber texture against contemporary neutral paintwork.

Dust the carved woodwork regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the grain, whilst cleaning the glass plate with a slightly dampened microfibre cloth to avoid moisture entering the frame rebate.
