Pair of French Mirrors

18th century
Description

A superb pair of Directoire-period mirrors. Original paint and mercury-glass. Late 18th to early 19th century, featuring a classical scene. Wood and painted stucco. These are among the earliest stucco decorations, made from crushed terracotta and a binder, used at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. To find a pair is particularly rare. I have priced them per mirror @ £3,300 but I am slightly reluctant to split them, please email to discuss if you only need one.

The Swedish bench is listed separately on the website.

This pair of late 18th to early 19th-century French pier mirrors follows the Louis XVI and Directoire styles. The tall vertical wooden frames carry an off-white painted finish with visible distressing, foxing on the mercury-glass plates, and moulded egg-and-dart borders. Each mirror incorporates carved corner rosettes and a classical bas-relief frieze in crushed terracotta stucco at the top, depicting figures in a pastoral scene. The two-part mirror plates sit within rectangular uprights edged in bead-and-reel detail. Each mirror measures 178 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. These decorative mirrors suit placement in a residential interior, such as above a fireplace alcove or on a principal drawing room wall, reflecting natural light and adding classical detail to the space.

A trumeau mirror originated in 18th-century France, traditionally designed to fit into the panelling above a mantelpiece or between architectural windows. It features a mirror plate surmounted by a sculpted bas-relief or painted decorative panel.

These mirrors are typically constructed from carved timber frames coated in gesso and finished with paint or gilding. The reflective mirror plates historically used mercury-amalgam glass, often divided into multiple sections.

Authentic period pieces display natural signs of age including surface foxing on the glass, hand-cut backing timber, layered gesso showing natural craquelure, and carved architectural details like egg-and-dart moulding.

A pair of trumeau mirrors can be hung symmetrically on either side of a fireplace, doorframe, or central sideboard to enhance room proportion. The soft painted tones add architectural depth and reflect natural light across minimalist spaces.

Dust the frame gently using a dry, soft brush or microfibre cloth to avoid lifting delicate gesso or flaking paint. Avoid applying liquid glass cleaners directly to the frame, as moisture can degrade historical finishes and backing.
