Description

Mid-18th Century English Walnut Side Chair with Pierced Splat Back, c.1740–1760

A good mid-18th century English walnut side chair, c.1740–1760, with an attractive transitional design combining earlier George II influences with details moving towards the Chippendale period. The chair has a shaped crest rail above a finely proportioned pierced vertical splat back, set between shaped rear uprights, giving it a light and elegant appearance.

The lower section retains a pleasing earlier character, with cabriole front legs, shaped front rail and rounded pad-style feet. The chair is constructed with a traditional drop-in seat, later upholstered in a patterned fabric. The walnut has a warm, mellow colour with good age, surface and patination, giving the chair an honest decorative presence.

A very usable period chair, well suited as an occasional chair, bedroom chair, desk chair or as part of a mixed group of early English seating.

Dimensions:

Height: 93.75 cm / 36 7/8 inches

Width: 57 cm / 22 1/2 inches

Depth: 52 cm / 20 1/2 inches

Seat height: 47 cm / 18 1/2 inches

Condition:

Good condition overall. The chair is structurally sound, with no loose joints and no significant signs of damage or repairs. There is some old worm, most noticeably to the back right foot, but the leg remains structurally secure. The bottom surface of that foot is a little uneven. The drop-in seat is structurally sound. The fabric cover is later and has some marks. There are the expected old marks, wear and minor surface blemishes commensurate with age and use.

This mid-18th century English side chair dates from the Georgian period and follows an English Country House style. Constructed from walnut with a dark brown finish, the chair has a yoke crest rail, a vertical pierced splat back, and a drop-in seat upholstered in a patterned fabric with beige and brown tones. The lower section incorporates cabriole front legs ending in pad-style feet. Measuring 93.75 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 52 cm deep, the chair stands at a practical height for daily seating. In a contemporary home, the chair serves well as an occasional seat, a bedroom chair, a desk chair, or as part of a mixed group of early English seating. The walnut timber shows a warm, mellow tone with visible age and patination. The open uprights and slender splats create a light silhouette, while the cabriole legs provide a sturdy base. The piece integrates easily into traditional and transitional rooms as functional seating.

Mid-18th century English side chairs feature shaped crest rails, splat backs that are often pierced or carved, and cabriole front legs. This transitional design period between Queen Anne and Early Georgian furniture prioritized balanced proportions and structural clarity.

Cabinetmakers used solid and veneered walnut wood alongside traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Seats were constructed as removable drop-in cushions, allowing fabric replacement without altering the structural frame.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-planed surfaces, irregular timber dimensions on non-visible undersides, and natural surface patination around contact points. Original joint construction frequently utilizes wooden dowels and hand-cut joinery.

A single historical side chair functions effectively as an accent piece beside a writing desk, in an entryway, or paired with contemporary minimalist dining tables to establish material contrast.

Keep dark timber furniture away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent moisture loss and wood movement. Dust surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply natural wax polish sparingly to preserve the timber finish.
