George II Walnut Side Chair with Floral Needlework Seat, C.1730–1750

18th century
For Sale by Leeds Antiques
Description

George II Walnut Side Chair with Floral Needlework Seat, c.1730–1750

An attractive early 18th-century English walnut side chair, dating to the George II period, circa 1730–1750.

The chair features an elegantly shaped vase splat beneath a gently curved top rail with rounded shoulders, supported by slender, shaped uprights. The upholstered drop-in seat is covered in colourful floral needlework, worked in shades of blue, green and cream against a neutral ground.

The shaped seat rails are raised on cabriole front legs terminating in trifid feet, with square-section rear legs and turned H-stretchers providing additional support. The chair retains pleasing proportions and the understated elegance characteristic of early Georgian furniture.

Dimensions:

Height: 102 cm (40.25 inches)

Width: 53 cm (20.75 inches)

Depth: 45.5 cm (18 inches)

Seat height: 49 cm (19.25 inches)

Condition:

Good, sound antique condition, with age-related wear and marks throughout. The surface appears to have been refinished at some point in its history, resulting in some loss of original patination. There is a split to the front left knee, as illustrated in the photographs, although the chair remains sturdy, with no loose joints. The floral needlework upholstery shows relatively little wear and remains perfectly serviceable.

An attractive and usable early Georgian chair, retaining much of its original character despite the alterations to its surface.

George II furniture, dating from roughly 1727 to 1760, spans the transition between Queen Anne curvilinear forms and early Chippendale styles. Key characteristics include the prominent use of solid walnut or mahogany, vasiform back splats, cabriole legs, pad or claw-and-ball feet, and heavy turned stretchers.

Side chairs from this period were predominantly framed in solid European walnut, American walnut, or mahogany, often with beech or oak secondary woods for internal seat rails. Seats were frequently upholstered in hand-worked wool needlepoint, tapestry, or silk velvet over horsehair padding.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery secured with wood pegs, hand-planed surfaces on unexposed framework, natural wood oxidisation inside seat rails, and wear patterns consistent with age on the lower stretchers and foot pads.

A mid-18th-century side chair works well as a standalone accent piece in a hallway, beside a writing desk, or in a bedroom corner. Its classic wood tones and structured silhouette allow it to pair seamlessly with minimalist contemporary decor or traditional schemes.

Dust wood frames regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish along the grain once or twice a year. Keep the chair away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, and clean the upholstery using a low-suction vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.
