This nineteenth century French Louis Philippe wall mirror exemplifies the understated elegance of the period through its combination of giltwood and exposed red bole. The tall rectangular frame incorporates rounded top corners, a beaded inner border, and an elaborate carved shell cresting at the apex. The surface displays a worn gold finish over bare gesso, revealing patches of red undertones alongside the original mercury glass plate. The structure includes its original backboards and measures 150 cm high by 83 cm wide. Placed above a mantelpiece in a living room, dining space, or bedroom, the piece reflects light while introducing authentic period character to domestic interiors.

Originating in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe from 1830 to 1848, these mirrors are characterised by a rectangular frame with rounded upper corners, straight lower edges, and gold leaf gilded over gesso.

These pieces were typically constructed with a carved pine or hardwood frame, coated in gesso plaster, finished with red bole clay, and gilded with gold leaf around silvered mirror glass.

Authentic period examples feature paneled timber backboards, natural surface wear showing underlying red bole clay beneath the gilding, beaded inner mouldings, and minor glass oxidisation.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace mantelpiece, place it on a console table, or lean it directly against a wall to enhance light and visual depth.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry feather duster or dry microfibre cloth, keeping moisture and liquid cleaning products away from the water-gilded surface.
