Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of nineteenth-century French Rococo Revival armchairs consists of two seats framed in giltwood with a gold finish and upholstered in ivory damask fabric with padded armrests and a floral pattern. The chairs feature elaborately carved wooden frames adorned with foliate decoration across the crest, chair back, legs, and seat rail, alongside a central shell motif on the cresting and seat rail, shapely cabriole legs ending in hoof feet, and brass nailhead trim along the upholstery seams. Each armchair measures 72.5 cm in width across the arms, 117 cm in height, and 66 cm in seat depth. These armchairs suit a living room, drawing room, or formal reception space, positioned around a fireplace or seating area as statement furniture pieces. They provide comfortable upright seating for guests when placed symmetrically in a traditional or transitional interior setting.

French giltwood armchairs from the 19th century, particularly Rococo Revival pieces, feature intricately hand-carved wooden frames coated in gold leaf over gesso, padded open arms (fauteuils), and curbed cabriole legs.

Frames were typically carved from dense hardwoods such as beech or walnut, coated with layer upon layer of white gesso and red clay bole, finished with gold leaf gilding, and upholstered in damask, silk brocade, or tapestry fabrics.

Authentic pieces show natural wear revealing the reddish bole or chalky gesso beneath the gold leaf, hand-carving irregularities, original mortise and tenon joinery, and traditional upholstery techniques involving horsehair and coil springs.

These statement pieces can be paired in a formal living room, placed on either side of a contemporary fireplace, or used to add classical contrast within a modern minimal or maximalist design scheme.

Giltwood frames should only be dusted gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth, keeping moisture and chemical cleaners away to prevent lifting the leaf. Upholstery should be vacuumed delicately and professional cleaning used for stains.
