Antique Victorian Elm & Ash Captain’s Chair C.1890

19th century
Description

A late 19th century captain’s desk chair, the shaped ash arms and turned beech spindles set over a beautifully figured, contoured single-piece elm seat, all raised on a beech frame of turned legs united by stretchers.

The chair has the upright stance and practical geometry associated with late Victorian clerical seating, making it a comfortable and functional working chair for a period library, study or home office. The original dark stained finish creates a striking aesthetic which contrasts nicely with the warm, mellowed wear along the ash arms.

Very good antique condition, with a pleasing patina and surface wear consistent with age. Structurally solid and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1910.

This Victorian captain's desk chair is an antique Victorian elm and ash item dating from around 1890. It has a shaped ash armrest, a contoured single-piece elm seat, turned beech spindles, and a beech frame with turned legs united by stretchers. The piece carries an original dark stained finish showing mellowed wear along the ash arms, an upright stance, a polished dark wood grain surface, and baluster-turned front legs ending in plain round feet. It measures 83 cm high, 62.5 cm wide, and 54 cm deep with a seat height of 46 cm. In a contemporary home, this functional working chair serves effectively in a period library, study, or home office. It provides a comfortable seating option at a partner desk, writing table, or bureau, whilst bringing traditional craft details to a domestic workspace.

Originating in the nineteenth century, a captains chairalso known as a smokers chairis a low-backed wooden armchair featuring a curved horseshoe-shaped crest rail supported by vertical spindles.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from durable hardwoods such as elm for the shaped seat board and ash or beech for the turned spindles, legs, and stretchers.

Authentic late Victorian examples feature hand-turned spindle supports, wear patterns around the stretcher rails, and wedged joinery visible beneath the thick contoured seat.

A captains chair functions as a desk seat in a home office or serves as an accent chair positioned in a hallway or quiet corner.

To preserve the timber finish, dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a beeswax polish annually while keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
