Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a wide wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, originating in the 17th century and gaining immense popularity during the Victorian era to reflect light across grand reception rooms.

Nineteenth-century mirrors were typically constructed from carved timber bases covered with gessoa smooth mixture of chalk and gluewhich was then detailed with intricate mouldings and finished with hand-applied gold leaf or gilded paint.

Authentic antique gilt mirrors often show signs of natural aging, including subtle cracking or crazing in the gesso, gentle wear on the gold leaf revealing the underlying wood or bole, and foxing or silvering degradation on the glass plate.

Position the mirror above a contemporary or traditional fireplace to act as a focal point, pairing the warm metallic frame with minimalist neutral walls, structured ceramic vases, or clean-lined modern art.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre feather duster, avoiding moisture, liquid cleaners, or chemical solvents that could dissolve the gesso substrate or strip the delicate gold leaf.
