This Victorian overmantel mirror dates from 1880 in an English Country House style, measuring 61 cm high, 102 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. The simulated rosewood dark brown timber frame incorporates an arched top, an inner gilt bead moulding, an egg and dart moulding, and parcel gilding in gold. Flaking is visible to the frame, along with slight foxing to the mirrored glass plate, while white porcelain bun feet support the base. Suitable for placement above the mantel in a home today, this piece functions as a practical and decorative wall accessory for a living room, drawing room, or hallway. The construction combines glass, rosewood, giltwood, and porcelain components in a traditional rectangular format with a curved upper profile. The mirror plate reflects ambient light while the decorative borders provide structural definition and period character to domestic interior spaces.

A Victorian overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Typically featuring a flat base and a soft arched top, these mirrors were crafted to fit architectural chimney breasts and reflect light throughout reception rooms.

These mirrors were constructed using solid timber foundations overlaid with hardwood veneers such as rosewood or mahogany. Moulded gesso and hand-applied gold leaf formed the decorative slip, while the glass plates were silvered using period manufacturing techniques.

Authentic 19th-century examples usually feature original pine backing boards, square-headed iron nails, natural age-related foxing to the glass, and porcelain or wooden support feet designed to raise the frame off the mantelpiece shelf.

Position the piece directly above a fireplace mantelpiece or atop a dining room sideboard to anchor the space. The contrast of dark polished timber and muted gold gilding pairs seamlessly with both historic period features and contemporary minimalist colour palettes.

Dust the wood and gilt mouldings regularly with a dry, soft bristle brush or microfibre cloth, keeping moisture away from water-gilded areas. Clean the mirror plate by spraying glass cleaner directly onto a cloth rather than onto the mirror itself to avoid edge seepage.
