This Victorian overmantle mirror dates from 19th-century England in the classic English Country House style. Constructed from wood, gesso, and glass, the piece carries a bright gold finish over its structured form. An arched top profile crowns the rectangular mirror glass, framed by a continuous moulding that rests horizontally upon a wide base. The top section displays an ornate, carved foliage crest featuring a central finial motif flanked by scrolling decorative accents, while small turned feet support the entire framework from below. The visible surfaces show light weathering with minor surface rubbing along the gilded edges. Measuring 80 cm high by 108 cm wide, the mirror provides substantial proportions suited to functional daily use. Positioned in a modern home, this giltwood mirror fits naturally above the mantelpiece in a living room, drawing room, or master bedroom to bounce natural light around the space. The decorative crest draws the eye upward, making it an effective focal point on a chimney breast or above a console table in a hallway. The warm gold tone pairs easily with both traditional period interiors and neutral contemporary decor schemes.

FAQs

An arched overmantel mirror is a wide wall mirror designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring a rounded or curved upper arch. Popularised during the 19th century, these mirrors were engineered to reflect candlelight and natural illumination, expanding visual room depth in formal reception spaces.

Nineteenth-century gilt mirrors typically feature a hand-carved wood frame overlaid with moulded composition detailing. The structural frame is coated in gesso before genuine gold leaf is applied via water or oil gilding onto hand-cut glass plate.

Authentic antique gilt mirrors feature natural wear revealing the red or yellow clay bole beneath the leaf gilding. The wooden backboards generally exhibit hand-sawn construction marks with age-related oxidisation, while the original glass plate displays subtle foxing or silvering degradation around the perimeter.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace mantelpiece or low architectural ledger to establish an anchor point in the room. Combining detailed gilding against neutral wall finishes creates an effective contrast between period craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a dry, soft camel-hair brush to prevent lifting delicate gold leaf. Glass cleaner must be applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the mirror surface to avoid moisture seeping into the surrounding giltwood or gesso.
