Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French gilt mirrors typically feature carved timber frames layered with gesso, coated in red bole, and finished with gold leaf application. They frequently showcase rococo or neoclassical decorative motifs, including rocaille cresting, floral garlands, acanthus scrolls, and arched upper profiles.

These mirrors were constructed using timber framework coated in gessoa smooth plaster-like substrateallowing sculptors to mold detailed relief ornamentation. Hand-applied gold leaf created the gilded exterior, which framed either mercury-amalgam or silvered glass plates.

Authentic period examples often display hints of red clay bole showing through where the gilded layer has naturally worn over time. Examining the rear typically reveals hand-planed timber backboards, square-cut nails, and age-related oxidation spots or foxing on the glass.

A large French gilt mirror serves as an architectural centerpiece when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece or mounted above a minimalist sideboard. The warm metallic tones provide contrast against neutral paintwork, dark accent walls, or contemporary furnishings.

Giltwood surfaces require gentle dusting using a soft dry brush or duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solutions that dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be sprayed onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate to protect the frame edge.
