Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian gilt mirrors are characteristically framed in wood coated with gesso and decorative plaster mouldings, finished with gold leaf. Produced during the nineteenth century, they often feature classical motifs, beadwork, or egg-and-dart borders surrounding central mirrored glass.

These mirrors were constructed using a soft wood base frame, onto which layers of gesso and moulded plaster (composition) were applied to create detailed patterns. Gold leaf was then applied over a red or yellow clay bole base and burnished.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit dark red or clay bole showing through worn areas of gilding, known as rub-through. The reverse typically shows aged pine backing boards, hand-cut nails, and natural oxidisation spots on the silvered or mercury glass.

A Victorian oval mirror can be positioned above a minimalist console table, mantlepiece, or sideboard to create a focal point. The metallic texture contrasts with modern flat wall paint and clean-lined contemporary furniture.

Dust the plaster frame gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid chipping fragile gesso. Never apply water, household detergents, or liquid polish to gold leaf, as moisture dissolves the water-gilding glue layer underneath.
