Neoclassical gilt mirrors feature symmetrical geometric or oval frames decorated with classical moulding details such as beaded trim and egg-and-dart borders. Popularised during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these mirrors reflected light in formal reception rooms and drawing rooms.

Traditional frames were constructed from carved timber, often pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso plaster. Skilled craftspeople applied fine gold leaf using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before burnishing selected areas for contrast.

Authentic period frames show natural wear, including subtle cracking in the gesso known as craquelure, exposed reddish bole clay beneath worn gold leaf, and hand-cut timber backing boards. Original mirror glass often exhibits light dark spots, silvering degradation, or slight distortion.

Position the mirror above a contemporary sideboard, console table, or fireplace mantel to create a central focal point. The warm metallic tones pair well with neutral plaster walls, dark paint schemes, or traditional panelling.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical polishes, or liquid cleaners that dissolve gold leaf and weaken historic gesso. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a slightly damp microfibre cloth, keeping moisture away from the frame edge.
