Antique Victorian Leather Chesterfield Armchair

19th century
Description

A large and very impressive antique Victorian leather Chesterfield armchair. This was made in England, we would date it to around the 1880’s period.

The quality is outstanding, this is extremely well made and comfortable. The deep buttoned leather has a gorgeous green colour tone and an absolutely beautiful patina. This is filled with horse hair and sits on mahogany bun feet with brass casters beneath.

We have had this revived and enhanced by our leather restorer, there is one very small repair to the back edge, barely noticeable at all. Overall this is in superb condition for its age.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chesterfield armchair is characterized by deep button tufting, heavy padding, and scrolled arms that sit at a similar height to the backrest. Originating in England during the eighteenth century, this style remains a standard feature in traditional interior design.

Victorian leather armchairs typically utilised solid hardwood frames, such as beech or oak, upholstered in full-grain cowhide leather. Internal construction often featured hand-tied coil springs, horsehair filling, and decorative brass studding around the perimeter.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples often display hand-stitched leather panels, natural hand-patinated wear, hand-turned wooden feet on brass castors, and period-correct brass stud detailing rather than modern continuous studding strips.

A deep green leather armchair serves as an anchor piece in contemporary schemes, pairing well with neutral wool rugs, minimalist metallic floor lamps, and dark timber bookshelves to create a layered aesthetic.

To preserve antique leather, clean the surface regularly with a dry soft cloth and apply a dedicated leather wax or conditioner twice a year to prevent drying out. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to reduce fading.
