Overmantle mirrors gained immense popularity during the Victorian era, designed specifically to sit on the mantlepiece above a fireplace to reflect light and amplify the sense of space in a room.

These frames were typically constructed from carved wood, such as pine or gesso over wood, finished with gold leaf gilding and ebonised accents, holding heavy bevelled or flat glass plates.

Authentic pieces often exhibit signs of age in the glass, such as foxing or subtle imperfections, hand-applied gilding showing natural wear, and traditional joinery or backboards on the reverse.

Placing it above a living room fireplace creates a striking focal point, while mounting it on a blank wall can expand light and add historic contrast to contemporary decor.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry cloth and clean the glass using a lint-free cloth with a neutral glass cleaner, avoiding harsh chemicals that can damage the antique finish.
