Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century gilt mirrors typically feature wooden frames finished with decorative gesso moulding and gold leaf gilding. Many designs from this era incorporated classical motifs such as foliate borders, beaded rims, and contrasting fabric slips, including velvet, to border the glass.

These mirror frames were primarily constructed from carved timber, such as pine or lime wood, coated in gessoa mixture of chalk and binder. Thin sheets of gold leaf were water-gilded or oil-gilded onto the gesso, and inner borders frequently used silk velvet or hand-poured glass plates.

Authentic pieces display natural signs of age, such as slight cracking or craquelure in the gesso, subtle wear to the gilding revealing the reddish clay bole underneath, and mercury or early silvering tarnish on the glass plate. The backboards are usually rough-sawn wood secured with hand-cut nails.

Positioning a pair of gilt mirrors symmetrically above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or flanking a doorway creates visual balance and reflects ambient light. The warmth of gold gilding contrasts effectively against contemporary dark paint tones or minimalist plaster walls.

Dust giltwood gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or liquid cleaners that can dissolve gesso and lift gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass by applying glass cleaner directly to a microfibre cloth rather than spraying the frame to prevent moisture seepage behind the slip.
