Coalbrookdale was a premier English foundry established in Shropshire during the 18th century, famous for pioneering fine cast iron moulding. During the Victorian era, the foundry produced detailed decorative items including mirrors, garden furniture, and architectural fittings featuring intricate relief work.

These mirrors were constructed using molten iron poured into detailed sand moulds to achieve crisp sculptural relief. Once cooled and finished, the iron frame was often coated with gilt bronze paint, lacquer, or gold leaf to protect the metal and simulate costlier cast bronze or carved giltwood.

Authentic Coalbrookdale items frequently display a stamped registration mark or diamond kite mark on the reverse alongside a foundry number. Crisp casting details, substantial physical weight, and crisp motto lettering or figurative motifs are key characteristics of 19th-century production.

Positioning a heavy metal mirror in an entryway or above a console table provides a strong focal point. The metallic finish pairs well with neutral painted walls, stone fireplaces, or timber panelling to create visual contrast.

Clean the frame using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to remove dust from intricate recesses. Avoid moisture and chemical solvents, which can compromise the painted or gilded surface and expose the underlying iron to oxidisation.
