This Victorian wall mirror dates from the 19th century and brings traditional English Country House character to any interior. The piece is constructed with a wide cushion frame finished in a rich brown burr walnut veneer with dramatic swirling figure patterns and deep amber tones, joined at mitred corners. Surrounding the rectangular mirror plate is a delicate gilded inner slip moulding that provides a warm contrast against the dark timber. The reflective glass displays minor age-appropriate foxing and characterful spotting, highlighting its long history. Measuring 54 cm high by 45 cm wide with a depth of 5 cm, the mirror is compact enough for versatile placement. It hangs particularly well above a sideboard in a dining room, in an entrance hallway to catch the light, or as a decorative accent piece in a living room.

A parcel gilt mirror features a frame where only specific section, such as an inner moulding or carved motif, is gilded with gold leaf, while the remainder reveals natural polished wood grain or paint.

Frame construction during this period often utilised softwood or oak cores veneered with rich figure hardwoods such as burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, combined with oil-gilded plaster or gesso mouldings.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit natural age-related oxidisation on the mirror backing, subtle cracking or wear to the gesso underlying the gold leaf, and hand-cut joinery on the timber backing board.

Positioning a wood and gilt mirror above a clean-lined console table or sideboard creates visual contrast between classic craft techniques and contemporary furniture design.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoid liquid cleaners on the gilded areas to prevent stripping the gold leaf, and apply specialized beeswax sparingly to the un-gilded timber sections.
