Mid 19th Century Elm & Ash Lancashire Rush Seat Country Elbow Chair Carver Armchair (Victorian)

19th century
Description

A mid-19th-century Lancashire-type country elbow chair or carver armchair, framed in elm and ash with its original rush seat. The chair features a triple row of turned spindle back supports between turned uprights, shaped open arms with turned supports, and a handwoven rush seat. It stands on rounded front legs with offset pad feet, squared rear legs, and connecting stretchers for stability.

An entirely original and very charming example of provincial craftsmanship, carefully cleaned, waxed, and ready for immediate use.

Dimensions (approximate):

Height: 104.5 cm (41")

Width: 61 cm (24")

Depth: 53.5 cm (21")

Seat height: 45 cm (17¾")

Condition:

In reasonably good overall and original condition, commensurate with age. Structurally sound and sturdy, with no loose joints. The original rush seat shows wear and a few broken strands at the front but remains strong and serviceable. Some light marks and blemishes consistent with age and use. Attractive colour, wax polish, and patina throughout. Sensitively cleaned and waxed, and now ready for use.
