Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the Victorian era, overmantel mirrorsfrequently termed chimney glasseswere manufactured to fit directly above fireplace hearths. They served both to reflect firelight and to demonstrate status in formal receiving rooms.

Frames were typically constructed from pine or lime wood coated in gesso and detailed with hand-carved or molded ornamentation. Mirror plates of this period often used silvered or mercury-backed glass set within solid wood backboards.

Authentic nineteenth-century mirrors feature heavy wooden backboards, natural foxing or dark spotting on the mirror plate silvering, and hand-cut joinery. Distressed paint finishes will show layer accumulation and natural wear along high-relief carved areas.

Mount the mirror directly above a modern or period fireplace mantelpiece to create an architectural focal point. Alternatively, lean the piece securely against a plain wall to create contrast between historic carved detail and contemporary minimalism.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush to clean carved recesses without flaking the paint finish. Avoid harsh chemical sprays on the glass, applying liquid cleaner sparingly to a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate.
