Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a wide or tall decorative mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantlepiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces were created to reflect ambient light throughout reception rooms and highlight the fireplace as the architectural focal point.

Victorian overmantel mirrors were typically built with timber frames coated in gesso, a smooth plaster mixture of chalk and glue. Sculpted decorative mouldings were applied over the gesso substrate before being finished with paint or gilding surrounding a silvered plate glass mirror.

Authentic 19th-century examples frequently exhibit original mercury or early silvered glass showing slight foxing, spotting, or wave distortion. Examining the rear of the frame usually reveals hand-sawn wooden backing boards, early nails, and aged craquelure across the gesso surface.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace mantlepiece or mount it low above a dining sideboard to maximise light reflection. Combining a distressed painted gesso frame with clean, modern furnishings creates a balanced contrast between historical texture and contemporary design.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid disturbing fragile paint and gesso mouldings. Clean the mirror glass by applying a small amount of non-ammonia glass cleaner directly onto a lint-free cloth rather than spraying the surface directly to protect the backing.
