Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th and 19th-century Europe, overmantel mirrors were crafted to sit directly above fireplace hearths to reflect ambient light across grand reception rooms. Italian artisans frequently combined hand-carved timber with painted gesso finishes to produce structural decorative focal points.

Frames from this era were typically built using carved softwood or hardwood bases layered with gesso plaster, which was then painted or gilded. The reflective glass originally incorporated mercury silvering or silver nitrate techniques, which naturally oxidise over time.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery on the back of the frame, aged timber backing boards, and natural surface wear. Authentic gesso layers often show fine hairline cracking, known as craquelure, alongside minor foxing within the glass plate.

Mount the mirror above a living room fireplace or position it resting on a grand sideboard to anchored focal interest. The muted, distressed painted texture contrasts effectively against modern wall tones and minimalist architectural features.

Dust the detailed carved surfaces with a dry, soft bristle brush to prevent loosening fragile paint or gesso layers. Clean the original mirror glass using a soft lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water, avoiding chemical glass cleaners near the timber edges.
