Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Raised chinoiserie on scarlet ground: English taste for Queen Anne revival during the 1920s.
Broad shallow bevels on the glass: commercial plate grinding of the early twentieth century.
Fine network of crazing through the lacquer: steady shrinkage of the paint over decades.
Gilt decoration rubbed through on high points: honest domestic wear.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This early 20th-century Chinoiserie triple-plate triptych overmantel mirror dates from 1920. The piece takes the form of an arch-top centre section flanked by two rectangular glass panels, set within a red lacquer frame with raised hand-painted gilt decoration depicting figures, landscapes, and trellis-work in the early 18th-century manner. The frame shows bevelled mirror plates, flat top edges above the side panels, and a string suspension cord attached at the upper corners. The dimensions measure 71 cm high, 84 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. Suitable for domestic placement above a mantelpiece or on a principal reception room wall, the mirror brings traditional English country house character to an interior. The smaller scale allows versatile placement in living rooms, dining spaces, or entrance hallways where a decorative focal point is required.

Chinoiserie refers to the European interpretation and imitation of East Asian artistic traditions, particularly popular from the 18th to the early 20th century. In overmantel mirrors, this style typically features hand-painted lacquerwork depicting stylized landscapes, pagodas, floral motifs, and gilded embellishments.

Traditional pieces utilised a solid timber substrate, such as pine or mahogany, coated with multiple layers of resinous lacquer or enamel paint to build a smooth crimson ground. The decorative detailing was subsequently applied by hand using gold leaf, bronze powders, or metallic paints.

Authentic period lacquerwork demonstrates subtle surface craquelure, natural age-related softening of the gilded details, and minor wear along exposed edges. The mirror glass on genuine pieces often shows light desilvering or foxing, while the reverse framing typically exhibits unpainted wood with historical joinery techniques.

A red Chinoiserie mirror functions as a bold statement piece above a fireplace, console table, or sideboard. Pairing it with modern neutral walls, brass lighting, and understated furniture allows the intricate red and gilt surface to anchor the room without overpowering the overall scheme.

Dust the lacquered frame gently with a dry, soft microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals, alcohol, or harsh solvents that could strip the lacquer or gilded details. Clean the glass sparingly by applying glass cleaner directly to a cloth rather than spraying the mirror surface to prevent moisture from seeping behind the frame.
